Gintama is a manga by Hideaki Sorachi which runs in Weekly Shounen JUMP since December 8, 2003. The anime is by Sunrise and started April 4, 2006, lasting for 201 episodes. However, the director of the anime states they will continue/be back again.
Gintama is revolves around the story of an almost diabetic samurai living in the Edo period of time after an alien invasion twenty years prior. Having being banned from using swords by the aliens, Sakata Gintoki decides to make a living by doing odd jobs with his fellow ‘employees’ (whom he never pays), Shinpachi and Kagura. During their job, they encounter the Shinsengumi (samurai police) numerous times and sometimes work as allies in order to complete the job which usually involves dangerous criminals. On the other hand, Gintoki’s former comrade, Kotaro Katsura, who leads a group of terrorists are also sometimes there to aid them.
This anime is mainly episodic, however, there are a few story arcs which follow throughout the anime and manga. Although a huge percentage of it is just filler, don’t let it fool you, Gintama is an anime that will always entertain the audience in any form.
When you do watch this anime, prepare to cry from laughter, happiness or sadness. Gintama anime contains a lot of parodies, but nonetheless, any audience will find the humour in this anime extremely hilarious. Despite the fact that it is mostly comedy, there is still a fair amount of drama and action. The characters are unique and unpredictable, to say the least. All of them are so incredibly lovable, it’s almost impossible to pick out one favourite.
This anime is one of my top personal recommendations. However, if you are hesitant to take on the 201 episodes, you can check watch Yorinuki Gintama-san which are re-runs of the best selected episodes of Gintama if you are curious as to what to expect.
